“Make it really awkward and creepy.”

Digital Getdown

For some reason, an artist has taken images of celebrities hanging out with their younger selves and given them the AI treatment — and the results are positively nightmarish.

The original work in question was created by Dutch artist Ard Gelinck, whose manipulated images of celebs like Will Smith, Keanu Reeves, and Tom Hanks canoodling with their younger selves went mildly viral in 2021 because, well, they actually looked pretty good.

Three short years later, however, the digital art landscape looks a lot different.

Accordingly, he set AI loose on the works. And the results are so uncanny, even the artist admitted in an Instagram post that they’re “f*cking scary”

M I N D B L 🔥 W I N G !!

Of the 20 images in this video, I created 17 and someone(Ai) finished it. 🤯😱😳😀🔥 UNF*KCING BELIEVABLE 😮 Ai is fun but also really, really crazy and scary and also moving. 🥹

Cursed

While Gelinck seems to think his creation is the good kind of scary, others find it to be creepy in the worst way.

In one post resharing one of the videos, which ranges from a strange-looking Emma Watson hugging herself as Harry Potter’s Hermione Granger to a grown-up Smith posing with himself in the “Fresh Prince” era, an X-formerly-Twitter user joked that it might be “the most cursed thing on the internet.”

Another user was even more scathing with their criticism.

“Hey AI what would it look like if a bunch of celebrities were in love with their younger selves?” the user quipped, in the style of an AI prompt. “Make it really awkward and creepy.”

In yet another post, a user posted a screenshot from the “hideous” clip that, unlike the other celebrity older-younger pairs, featured three Michael Jacksons instead of two — one in his later years prior to his death in 2009, one at the height of his pop career, and another of him as a child in the Jackson Five.

“This one stood out for some reason,” the user noted.

Even with recent years’ leaps and bounds in sophistication, these sorts of outputs are still so uncanny that they even seem to freak out the people creating them — a certain indictment of the reality of generative AI as it stands today.

Tech

A user on X/Twitter shared an almost minute-long clip of Hollywood celebrities embracing their younger selves. The AI-generated video featured Emma Watson, Her Harry Potter co-star Daniel Radcliffe, Rapper Eminem, Keanu Reeves, Tom Hanks, Will Smith, late Michael Jackson, Johnny Depp, Harrison Ford and others. The video was generated using OpenAI’s Sora rival app, Kling AI. The AI tool is developed by China based Kuaishou. The AI tool claims to offer up to two minute long videos, employing 3D spatio-temporal attention modules, and producing authentic physics simulation, with cinematic video quality in a flexible aspect ratio. Besides text-to-video, the firm also offers AI enabled image-to-video and video extension tools.

Netizens were equally amused and horrified at the video, watching their celeb’s somewhat distorted selves embracing their younger version or vice-versa. The short clip also opens up a can of worms on ethics, consent and copyright over celebrity images. With more tools releasing in the wild for free or negligible cost, it will become a regulatory nightmare to curb the wave of AI content that will litter the already cluttered internet. Not to mention the additional carbon footprint per pixel.

Thai studio creates video of graduate hugging late mum by using AI

Having missed the opportunity to take a graduation photo with his late mother, a Thai graduate asked an online studio to ‘recreate’ the touching scene, reported Honkrasae.

However, the studio delighted him by delivering more than he asked for.

On Monday (5 August), the studio posted a video on TikTok showing how they created an AI-generated clip using photos of the pair.

The outcome shows the man kneeling in his graduation gown, holding a certificate holder, and his mother sitting next to him.

The mum then gets up and hugs the man, placing her hands on the latter’s shoulders.

The wholesome video has since garnered more than 1.5 million views and 180,000 likes.

Speaking to Honkrasae, the OP said the customer’s mother suffered from heart disease and had to undergo treatment at a hospital for three months.

Unfortunately, while the customer was waiting for his mum to recover, the latter experienced a heart attack and passed away.

The studio decided to produce the video as the customer mentioned previously that he hadn’t been able to hug his mother for a long time.

Netizens moved to tears

Many netizens commented that they ended up in tears after watching the video. Some expressed that they wanted the studio to create similar videos for them.

This TikTok user said she cried when the mum got up to hug the graduate.

“Is it expensive? I want to get one for myself. I graduated from a police cadet academy, but my mother had passed away,” another netizen commented.

Another user described the picture as priceless, praising the studio and expressing support for the graduate.
